Protesters: Plane Stupid
Target: Lord Mandelson, Business Secretary
Location: Royal Society, London
Date: 6 March
- What happened?
A campaigner from anti-airport expansion activists Plane Stupid threw a cup of green custard in the face of Lord Mandelson. The Business Secretary had arrived at the Royal Society, where he was due to give a speech about a low-carbon future.
- Why the protest?
Plane Stupid believes Mandelson was instrumental in getting the Government to approve the third runway at Heathrow airport. It also wanted to prevent Mandelson from making 'political capital' from speaking about a low-carbon future.
- How did Mandelson respond?
He rushed inside with his face hidden, but re-emerged later and laughed it off. 'She was so busy throwing what seemed like green soup... in my face, that she failed to tell me what the protest was about,' he said. He later said he should be 'grateful' to the protester for 'helping to put this very important issue on the map'.
- How did the media cover it?
Sky News managed to capture the incident on camera and the news spread like wildfire. The weekend papers went into detail, with The Guardian (on Saturday) running a page three story, and The Observer running a comment piece from Plane Stupid co-founder Joss Garman.
