Mark Popescu joins at the end of the month, replacing Mark Devane, who joins the BBC Trust as head of communications at the start of April.

Popescu, who took voluntary redundancy in 2007 and is not believed to have held a role since then, also oversaw the re-branding and re-launch of News 24 in 2003.

During a 20 year career in broadcasting Popescu held a series of senior posts at both the BBC and ITN, including editor of both the BBC Ten O'Clock News and ITV's News at Ten.
