Mail union fights back

The trade union representing postal workers has hit out at the media tactics employed by the Government over its plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail.

The union attacked the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) for 'leaking' a letter by Jane Newell, chair of the Royal Mail Pensions Trustees.

Sian Jones, press officer at the Communications Workers Union, said the letter 'was not cleared on behalf of the trustees'. She also claimed that BERR had circulated the letter in a bid to divert media attention away from the core privatisation issue.

Jones told PRWeek: 'The letter was used to manipulate the news agenda.' A spokesman for BERR said people needed to know the facts.
