Baylay succeeds Tim Davie, who was appointed director of BBC Audio & Music last year.

She was previously general manager of Microsoft's UK online services division.

In her new role, Baylay will lead over 400 staff responsible for marketing, communications, audience research and audience services across the BBC. She will report directly to BBC director-general Mark Thompson.

Thompson said: ‘Sharon’s passion, energy and leadership will help ensure the BBC keeps the needs and views of our audiences at the forefront of everything we do. Her experience of relating to audiences in different environments will be especially valuable.’

Baylay joined Microsoft in 1993, where she ran the international MSN businesses in EMEA, Asia Pacific, Greater China and the Americas before her most recent role.

Baylay began her professional career at Olivetti and Computacentre, working on IBM, Apple and Compaq.
