Lewis, who has been at Vodafone for just over four years, said his decision was related to structural changes to the corporate affairs department at the group level.

He insisted his parting with the company was ‘completely amicable’. Lewis added: ‘In the light of the new structure I’ve decided it’s a good time to leave.’

Lewis does not have a new job lined up but said he planned to stay in the communications business and that he had already been in discussions with other companies.

A new external affairs group will be created at Vodafone. Although there has been no confirmed downsizing of the communications team, Lewis said that ‘at this stage we can’t rule out the possibility of head count reductions’.

Matthew Kirk, who worked in a regulatory and public policy role, will be promoted to director of external affairs.
