- BBC Trust has hired Mark Devane, head of news at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, as its head of comms. He replaces Tina Stowell, now BBC head of corporate affairs.

- WPP Group is to axe thousands of jobs in the US and Europe, according to press reports. WPP sources said PR should escape the worst of the cuts.

- Paver Smith, the Liverpool-based agency, has acquired rival Manchester firm Stripe Communications.

- Fat Face, the outdoor clothing brand, is looking for a consumer PR agency. The brand will put together a shortlist in March.

- Unison has bolstered its press office by recruiting former Cambridge Evening News journalist Rebecca Findley and Next press office staffer Sophie Madden.

- Saturday has taken a majority stake in Mulberry's PR agency MO Communications. The lifestyle marketing group will merge its fashion agency Relative PR with MO, to create Relative MO.

- Rileys, the snooker club chain, has signed sports and consumer agency Paul Ridley to drive footfall and raise awareness.

- The Malta Tourism Authority has brought in Media Consulta as its retained UK agency as part of a five-figure brief. The agency will promote Gozo, Malta's sister island.
