The Scottish Conservative Party is ramping up its comms firepower with the hire of a new director of strategy and communications.

Broadcast journalist Michael Crow takes up the newly created post next week. He is currently political correspondent for Scottish station STV and presenter of the Politics Now programme.

Crow will report to Conservative Party director of comms Andy Coulson and Scottish Conservative chairman Andrew Fulton.

The appointment reflects Tory leader David Cameron’s determination to make inroads with voters north of the border.

Hamish Macdonell, Scottish political editor at The Scotsman, said Crow was needed: ‘Crow joining the party is a good idea. He is a high profile political journalist and it is important for the party in Scotland that it can attract people like that.’
