Jonathan Ray starts his head of comms position today. He reports directly to Russell Group director-general Dr Wendy Piatt.

His role encompasses national media liaison, advocacy and lobbying, PR and corporate marketing communications.

Ray was previously director of public affairs and comms at the University of Nottingham, a position he held for three years.

He has also been head of marketing comms at the East Midland Development Agency and worked as a BBC and ITV journalist for fifteen years.

Ray will be responsible for communicating the strengths of the group’s members (which include Oxford, Cambridge and LSE) to decision makers and the general public in an increasingly competitive market.

‘Global competition, especially from the United States, but increasingly from Asia, is fierce, and current economic conditions post a significant challenge’, he said.
