Stuart Hudson left the gas and electricity regulator yesterday. It is understood that he will take a policy-focused role at Number Ten.

A spokesman for Ofgem confirmed Hudson’s departure but declined to provide details of the new role.

Ofgem has not lined up a replacement for Hudson and is expected to begin a recruitment process in the year.

The Prime Minister has shaken up Downing Street in recent months – disposing of strategy chief Stephen Carter and handing a crucial role to Cabinet Office minister Liam Byrne.
