Voluntary Sector: The Week in Charities

- Media Trust, the charity that works with the media to help the voluntary sector with comms and PR, has picked Porter Novelli as its media-training partner. The agency will run a series of training events for charities that work with the trust.

- ShelterBox, the UK-based disaster relief charity, and Vide Urgente, the Brazilian road accident prevention charity, have asked PR university students from Falmouth and Brazil to create joint campaigns. Using web conferencing, the students will brief each other on their home countries.

- St Basils, a Birmingham-based homelessness charity, is using Golley Slater to increase its Midlands profile. The agency will promote its annual fundraising event the BIG SleepOut to corporate organisations and consumers.

- Dogs Trust claims to be the first charity to use live event blogging at its latest conference. Web editor Alex Roumbas said the tactic was invaluable in spreading key messages to a global audience.

- The Charities Aid Foundation is urging charity PROs to consider campaigns asking young people to donate via text. Research from nfpSynergy found that 38 per cent of 25- to- 34-year-olds and 31 per cent of 16- to- 24-year-olds would give to charity through text.
