Firms scale back on PR

Comms directors are battening down the hatches to ward off the effects of the credit crunch, with nearly a fifth preparing to scale back agency support in 2009.

This grim outlook comes from a new survey of comms directors by PRWeek and Brands2Life.

Further, 11 per cent of comms bosses interviewed in the survey revealed they had already been asked to trim their in-house teams.

However, the results also offered some rays of hope for the industry. Just under a quarter of comms directors said they had come to rely more on their agencies' input in recent times, and nearly three-quarters said company leaders now took PR seriously and understood what it could do for a company.
