From our Readers - Immigrants must be employed responsibly

The PRCA's recent survey (News, 12 September) reveals that a staggering number of employers do not understand the processes or costs involved in qualifying as a sponsor under the new immigration points-based system.

One of the strengths of the UK PR industry is its diversity. It is one of the most desirable destinations for aspiring PROs and boasts some of the best talent from around the world.

In many ways, the new system will simplify the process of sponsoring the employment of people from outside the EU. But it will also place greater responsibilities on those employers to maintain robust human resources practices.

One of the key compliance considerations is the requirement that employers apply for a licence before they are able to employ migrants. Employers should apply now to ensure minimal disruption when the new legislation comes into force fully on 24 November.

To help further clarify their responsibilities under the new system, we have produced a brief guide for employers that is available on our website.
