The four 'team of the year' nominations are all London councils - Camden, Hackney, Islington and Lewisham.
Of the total 83 nominations, 37 are from London. Islington has eight nominations while Camden has seven.
But Hillingdon Council director of comms David Holdstock denied that regional PROs needed to up their game, adding: 'Like any high-profile awards, its about us all learning from the best in class.'
And Haringey Council head of comms and CIPR local government chair Mike Browne disagreed that the awards were still dominated by London councils: 'If you look at the young communicators category it is pleasing to see that most rising stars are from outside the capital.'
The overall winners will be announced on 17 October at the Assembly Room in Bath.
