Weber Shandwick wins Microsoft brief

Microsoft has handed Weber Shandwick a wide-ranging brief to lead on all non-consumer PR across the EMEA region.

Weber Shandwick will act as a ‘hub’ for all local markets in EMEA, while also handling pan-European publications such as the Financial Times and The Economist. Some 30 to 40 consultants are expected to work on the account.

The brief was previously split between tech specialist Waggener Edstrom and public affairs firm APCO.
Weber Shandwick Microsoft client relationship leader George Coleman said: ‘I think Microsoft reached a point in its growth and it wanted an agency to align with its goals.’

The account will see Weber Shandwick lead on corporate comms and business campaigns promoting products such as Windows Client and Microsoft Dynamics. The brief does not include consumer-focused PR, public affairs or local market execution.

Edelman continues to manage UK corporate PR and public affairs for Microsoft as well as consumer PR for Xbox, while Inferno handles Microsoft’s UK tech and business PR.

Red Consultancy works on consumer accounts such as Hotmail.

Microsoft EMEA PR lead Pete Devery stressed that Waggener Edstrom would continue to handle corporate comms out of Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

The appointment follows a two-month agency review.

Separately, Yahoo has han¬ded its consumer PR account to Publicasity, following a four-way pitch.
The account, thought to be well into six figures, has been described by tech PROs as one of the most sought-after in the industry. Agency MD Emma Wright will lead the account.
