Weston-super-Mare's famous and now decrepit Grand Pier has brought in PR support following July's devastating fire.

West Country-based agency Empica has been appointed by Grand Pier owners Kerry and Michelle Michael for a positive campaign as the rebuilding process gets under way.

'The pier has had more media interest in the past few weeks than ever in its 104-year history,' said Kerry Michael. 'It is important for the future of the pier and Weston-super-Mare as a resort that we use that interest in a positive way as we start rebuilding.'

Michael said the next task for the owners was to clear the site as soon as possible so as not to put the sub-structure at any further risk.

'We will work with our professional advisers to design, plan and build the new pavilion as soon as is practically possible,' she said. 'Communicating what is going on to the public and other interested parties is a major task and we need the support of a local, hands-on agency.'

Empica, formerly Martin Powell Communications, is based in Long Ashton, North Somerset.
