Portland's Tim Allan: Bethell to depart

James Bethell has quit the agency, headed by Tim Allan, to become communcations director at right-leaning think tank Policy Exchange.

Bethell joined Portland in January 2006 as a partner, having previously been MD of entertainment group Ministry of Sound.

Bethell stood as the Conservative candidate for Tooting in the 2005 general election and also worked on David Cameron's successful Tory leadership campaign.

His departure comes at a time when most public affairs agencies are desperately trawling for consultants who can help them to make connections with Cameron's inner circle.
