Web barons - The Register

- What is it? News, opinions and reviews on tech and gadgets.

Readership: More than 34 million page imprints in April 2008 (ABCe)

Motto: 'Biting the hand that feeds I.T'

- Who are the web barons?

John Lettice is the UK editorial director; his US counterpart is Drew Cullen. Heavy hitters include editor Joe Fay and news editor John Oates.

- So it is not all laptops and iPhones?

'I did an analysis of the de Menezes shooting that I thought was pretty good,' says Lettice. 'Some of the best Register stories are surprises.' Recent non-tech pieces include a look at Paris Hilton's spoof presidential campaign.

- Approachability

Send a press release, but make sure it is relevant. 'I am particularly dismayed by the way PROs' discovery of mass emailing has destroyed the boundary between press releases and spam,' says Lettice.
