Hit or Miss - 'Nasty' Countdown bosses force out long-standing co-presenter Carol Vorderman

Down and out Channel 4's long-running game show Countdown hit the headlines after the resignations of host Des O'Connor and - in particular - glamorous co-presenter Carol Vorderman. Newspapers devoured Vorderman's revelation that she was told to take a 90 per cent pay cut. The partner of late Countdown host Richard Whiteley also fed into the media frenzy, accusing programme bosses of being 'nasty'.

HOW I SEE IT - Nicky Minter-Green - MD, The Television Consultancy

You do the maths: one terrestrial channel (C4), plus one entertainment establishment (Countdown), minus a national institution (Vordeman), divided by a 90 per cent paycut, equals a whole lot of trouble.

In 1982, Carol Vorderman won the nation's heart with her mix of maths whizz and beauty queen. Carol denied herself untold riches to stand by the programme that made her name, even after the death of her friend and colleague Richard Whiteley.

How is she repaid? With credit crunch verbose threats in the style of 'nobody is bigger than the programme love'. The media lapped it up and have queued up to deplore C4.

Tip for C4 - loyalty. A simple word of five consonants and two vowels.
