Barron will join the search engine giant in September, replacing DJ Collins, who recently became Google's European comms director.

Barron's appointment, reported on (28 July), surprised many observers who had expected him to move to a channel controller role. Barron told PRWeek: 'I loved Newsnight and wanted to move on to another role that had the same eventfulness. I expect I will be dealing with a lot of politics, politicians and policy in the new role.'

On the experience that he brings to the role, Barron said: 'Television remains a very powerful medium. There's little doubt Google recognised that my long media experience and contacts within TV would be interesting in terms of getting the message across.'

Barron became editor of Newsnight in 2004, after spells at ITV and Channel 4 News.

He said he did not rule out a move back to the BBC at some stage in the future.

Collins said: 'If you look at our comms people in the UK, most of them had no experience of PR before joining us.'
