Liberty Electric Cars has hired McKee PR to handle its £300,000 UK and overseas brief, covering product launches, corporate and product PR and stakeholder relations.

The move has emerged in the week that the Daily Mail reported how Britain could become the ‘electric car capital of Europe'.

The paper stated that General Motors, the world's biggest car company, wants to build 220,000 electric cars in the UK every year by 2015.

Last month, Liberty Electric Cars announced it was investing £30m in the re-engineering of large luxury cars and 4x4s into electric vehicles. This includes the world's first electric Range Rover.

Liberty founder and CEO Barry Shrier said: ‘We needed a PR company that has strong corporate credentials to help position the business with its varied audiences, and also the technical knowledge, contacts and creativity to exploit opportunities in the rapidly evolving electric car landscape.'

McKee PR is headed by Stewart McKee, who previously worked as MG Rover Group PR director and Nissan Europe head of corporate affairs.

-- Separately, California-based electric car pioneer Tesla Motors recently hired Automotive PR to launch the world's first all-electric sports car in Europe.
