The move comes after the hire of Hill & Knowlton consumer MD Rachel Friend in February. Friend is managing the account and has already seen ten agencies.
The supermarket chain, once the UK's largest and now third, wants to appoint by the end of next month.
'We have a new consumer PR brief that we're asking a few agencies to pitch for and we're hoping to appoint by the end of August,' said the firm in a statement. 'Hill & Knowlton is the only consumer agency we work with on a formal basis, although their current brief is focused on health.'
Sainsbury's currently uses Halpern for its Tu Clothing range, Finsbury for financial work and Fishburn Hedges for public affairs. None of these accounts are affected. Sainsbury's said it has already reached a shortlist and is 'not looking to include any additional agencies into the process'.
