Public Affairs: The Week in Lobbying

ITV has brought in Marks & Spencer's government affairs manager as the broadcaster continues to transform its comms operation. Jane Hill will join ITV on 14 July as head of public affairs. The role is understood to be newly created and Hill will report to Nigel Warner, director of public affairs at ITV.

The Football Association's long-serving head of public affairs Phil Smith is leaving to join Sport England as director of sport.

Microsoft has hired John Vassallo to the new role of vice-president of EU affairs, based in Brussels. He joins from General Electric, where he was senior counsel and director of European affairs.

David Hill, Bell Pottinger director and former Number 10 comms chief, has said that a government minister should be present at daily lobby briefings to improve relations between government and the media. Hill made the call in a speech this week. Addressing delegates at the Westminster Media Forum conference on government and the media, he said: 'There should be a senior minister present to answer key issues of the day.' But Hill also called on the lobby to be more open to positive stories about government successes.
