Mayor Johnson in the soup for failing to stand by political adviser James McGrath in wake of race row.

James McGrath is an incredible political strategist who is held in the highest regard by the vast majority of the Tory hierarchy. His loyalty and straight-talking, no-nonsense approach have clearly led to this misrepresentation.

Successful administrations are built on long-term strategies, with the strength and confidence to ignore short-term political mishaps.

The fact that Boris Johnson reacted like this suggests a degree of panic, and I fear it will come back to haunt him. I know his decision has buoyed the Labour Party in London and it will now target other advisers as it seeks to destabilise the administration.

Supported by Guto Harri, Johnson now needs to move on quickly.
