Defra appoints acting director of comms

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has turned to its principal private secretary to fill its director of comms role.

Rory O’Donnell replaces Steve Morris, who left Defra this week to join public affairs agency Portland PR as partner for client servicing.

O’Donnell will be in place at Defra until the position is filled permanently. He will work closely with the Central Office of Information (COI).

At Portland, Morris reports to MD Tim Allan, who was previously Alastair Campbell's deputy at Number 10.

Morris himself is a former Number 10 staffer, having previously spent five years as head of the Strategic Communications Unit.
