Opinion: Letters - Hilton making the most of opportunity

You report that Conservative comms director Steve Hilton is 'to take more of a back-seat role' (News, 6 June). The truth is that Steve's partner Rachel (Whetstone) has been offered the corporate opportunity of a lifetime at Google.

And yes, brilliant communicators take work-life decisions - even blokes. Political leadership teams operate in an increasingly virtual world as we saw from the Blairite email trail, so of course Steve can make a contribution from 5,300 miles away.

As with all the best strategists, once their approach is understood and embedded in an organisation, it is time to move onto the next challenge.

Political anoraks are obsessed by the mechanics and messaging of the Obama campaign; Obama's internet team trialled many new ideas with John Cruddas during his Labour deputy leadership bid.

There is a strong argument that Cameron's top 'blue skies' thinker will be spending his time rather wisely in the US.
