ABPI appoints Slee as head of media

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) has filled its head of media position following an extensive five-month search.

Grayling director Crispin Slee is joining the pharma industry trade body next month. He replaces outgoing head of media Richard Ley, who is retiring.

Slee joins the ABPI from his role as board director at Grayling, which he joined three years ago. He will report to corporate affairs director David Lewis, who moved from Britvic last summer (PRWeek, 28 March).

Slee is a former journalist and previously ran his own news and photographic agency, Northants News, for seven years. He moved to Grayling in 2002 and has since has worked on accounts for Dairy Crest and Mars, who he advised during their vegetarian issue last year. The Mars account is now going out to pitch (PRWeek, 30 May).

Lewis said: 'Crispin will be responsible for building on the solid foundations that the ABPI and industry have with the media.

'We especially want to strengthen our relationships with consumer press, particularly targeting the women's and leisure press. In the past we have focused on reactive news with the broadcast media and broadsheets and we want to become more proactive.'

Ley is stepping down this month after 13 years at the trade body. He announced his retirement in January (PRWeek, 25 January).

'Richard is a true professional. We shall miss him and wish him well,' said Lewis.
