Barclays Capital appoints director

Barclays Capital, the global investment banking division of Barclays Bank, has appointed a new director of public affairs.

Mitchell Coen joined Barclays this week from banking giant Merrill Lynch, where he spent five years as vice-president for government relations, covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Before joining Merrill Lynch in 2002, Coen spent two years in the House of Lords working as a political aide to Labour life peer Lord Janner of Braunstone.

At Barclays Capital, Cohen reports to US-based global head of government relations Joanne Medero and works alongside UK-based corporate affairs director Lee Bruce.

Barclays recently lost its group corporate affairs director Stephen Whitehead to FTSE 100 insurer Prudential. He joined the Pru - the UK's second-largest insurance group - as group comms director last year (PRWeek, 27 September 2007).
