FRONT PAGE: Harri was in line for top Tory job

Boris Johnson's new communications chief Guto Harri has admitted he was in talks to be the Conservative Party's communications director last year.

Harri, who joined Johnson's team at City Hall last week, makes the admission in an exclusive interview with PRWeek. Former BBC political reporter Harri also gives the inside track on his appointment as the London mayor's comms supremo.

PRWeek first revealed that Harri was in the frame for the Tory job last year , before ex-News of the World editor Andy Coulson was appointed.

Harri tells how an approach was made while he was the BBC's North American business correspondent.

‘I did have conversations with certain people about possibly taking some role with David Cameron, but I was in New York at the time and it didn't happen,' Harri says.

Harri also tells how he and Johnson first discussed working together over ‘a good bottle of dry white wine'.
