Diary: Break a leg - it's all for a good cause

Genius is not a word Diary often associates with dreary northern sud-fest Coronation Street. Nevertheless, the eternally popular televisual spectacular was subject to a rather clever PR move last week.

PRWeek moles have discovered the truth behind a storyline in which Gail Platt was pushed down the stairs and ended up in hospital.

A dastardly and brilliant plan by Manchester-based Golley Slater PR required a nasty accident to befall the unlucky character.

Once Gail was in traction, the PR team made sure a 'Manchester Midnight Walk' poster took pride of place in the background of the hospital scene to promote the summer event on behalf of client St Ann's Hospice. The poster was prominent as Audrey (Gail's mother) sounded off about David (the very evil-doer who pushed her down the stairs, no doubt paid by Golley Slater) in front of it.

Perhaps David has a charitable side, after all? Gail can be cheered by the fact it was all in a good cause - St Ann's Hospice apparently received a huge surge in enquiries about the Midnight Walk during the 24 hours after the show was screened.
