The consortium of Brunello di Montalcino, comprising 13 vineyards across Florence and Siena, has hired Italian agency Barabino Partners to protect its reputation.

The wineries are under investigation by the US Department of Agriculture, which alleges that some of the group's expensive wines have been made with a variety of cheap grapes rather than the 100 per cent Sangiovese vines as required.

600,000 bottles of wine, some retailing at hundreds of pounds, have already been recalled.

Barabino Partners' London office, led by Giovanni Sanfelice, is dealing with international media requests.
