New comms head for Stockport Council

Stockport Council has appointed a new comms chief, who arrives straight from a role as head of press at Manchester City Council.

Janine Watson becomes assistant chief executive (comms) on 16 June. She replaces Peter Blake, who retired in March after 22 years at Stockport Council.

Watson has been with Manchester since 1999, before which she was local government editor at both the Liverpool Echo and the Manchester Evening News.

She was chosen by the CIPR as North West PR professional of the year 2006 to 2007.

The news follows a restructuring of Stockport's marketing and comms team last September.

Stockport's comms team is currently focusing on the £500m regeneration of Stockport town centre, while also promoting its 'community pride' programme.

The council also recently used blogs and interactive web pages to encourage staff to keep fit.

The scheme is following the progress of employees taking part in the BUPA Manchester 10K Run held in May (PRWeek, 29 March).
