Police and fire teams join council body

The body responsible for local government PR is opening its doors to police and fire PROs as a result of these professions' increasingly close working relationships with councils.

The LGcommunications committee, chaired by Dudley Council head of comms Jayne Surman, has broadened its membership to include bodies such as the Association of Police Public Relations Officers.

LGcommunications has also amended its main aims to cover 'work in partnership with all public authorities that work with communities in the UK and Ireland, including police, fire, health, economic development and regional authorities'.

Representatives from relevant associations will be invited to the body's annual conference in London in May and LGcommunications will mount a membership drive to attract organisations from other public service disciplines.

Surman explained that the change follows 'the increasingly close working relationship between local government and other public bodies'.

For instance, it was announced last month that the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) is working with Lewisham Borough Council's comms team to review its own communications.

Lewisham is looking at the MPA's strategy, planning for external and internal comms, resources, online comms and marketing.
