DIARY: It could be a bit of old Irish blarney

The Irish contingents of practically everywhere were dancing in the streets and polishing off food-in-a-glass Guinness in celebration of St Patrick's Day last week. In an effort to cash in on the annual green-fest, Irish-run agency Eulogy released a poll on Londoners' views of Irish brands.

Tubthumping rockers U2 topped out with 15 per cent of the vote, pushing ladies liquor Baileys (14 per cent) into second spot. Guinness ranked third at 12 per cent, ahead of Magners cider at eight per cent.

But Eulogy chief executive Adrian Brady was oddly keen to let Diary know that, nationally, the results were very different - with Guinness being most popular and bedwetting boyband Westlife beating U2 by a single percentage point, picking up ten per cent of the vote.

It is difficult to take the survey entirely at face value, though. Diary learned last week Brady is a native of Sligo, the home of Westlife. 'That is entirely coincidental,' said Brady.
