It is a huge challenge facing the PR profession today. As a black applicant myself I found it a real struggle when trying to secure my first job in the industry.
I felt a sense of intimidation because the workforce of all agencies and in-house teams to which I applied did not show any reflection of the multicultural society in which we live.
Fortunately it made me more determined to be offered a break. But there is still a way to go in proving those people wrong who told me to spare myself any more upset by taking up another profession because sadly I did not fit the image of a PRO.
The discouraging lack of British black and Asian PROs means a true loss of talent and a knowledge gap in the industry. We must ensure this is filled by promoting PR as a reasonable career path to candidates of an ethnic background.
