DIARY: Aerospace evens score with activists

Arguments still rage whether activist group Plane Stupid's moniker refers to Heathrow's mooted third runway or the Parliament-scaling nutcases themselves.

Plane Stupid and fellow headline grabbers Greenpeace climbed up the Commons buildings and evaded Heathrow's security last week. It was all an effort to highlight how much they do not want a third runway at London's busiest airport.

So successful were the campaigns at filling column inches that this very page gave it a 'Hit' last week (PRWeek, 29 February).

But, in the interests of balance, Diary rooted through this week's PRWeek mailbox and found a letter from the Society of British Aerospace Companies comms manager Matthew Knowles, who refers specifically to Greenpeace earlier last week condemning Virgin Atlantic's planned biofuel programme as a 'publicity stunt'.

'It is a bit rich following the actions of Greenpeace and Plane Stupid activists later that week,' he rants. 'At least Virgin's activity was legal.'

So it's Greenpeace 1, Aerospace 1, then.
