DIARY: Let's Meet at - Oscars Restaurant, Pinewood Studios

An absolute one-off, Oscars is the formal restaurant at Pinewood Film Studios. It is located in the ballroom of the 19th century mansion Heatherden Hall and has seen some history including the signing of the treaty for the Irish Free State.

It has also seen many of the greats of cinema - Charlton Heston, Omar Sharif and a few Carry On stars.

Today you will still see well-known stars of film and TV. But most of the time it is filled with the buzz of creative people from the film and TV business of whom you will not have heard - but who make films and programmes.

On summer days you can have a drink looking on to the ornamental gardens that have served as the backdrop for so many films.

The food is reasonably priced and straightforward rather than pretentious. The decor and food is traditional rather than faddish; think wood panelling in the restaurant and leather Chesterfield armchairs in the bar.

The menu changes daily but it is the sort of place where you know a steak or a roast will be good. If it is fish, it will be fresh and simply served.

Although essentially for those who work at Pinewood, people from outside are welcome if they book.

Just beyond the M25 west of London, Oscars is easily accessible.
