LETTERS: Join us in lobbying for transparency

The British public considers politics and government to be in the hands of privileged elites, said the Power Inquiry in 2006. One issue that stood out was the need to address 'the extraordinary power afforded to corporations and their lobbying groups'.

To ignore this is to ignore public opinion. This is the context in which members of the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency gave evidence to the Select Committee Inquiry on lobbying (News, 1 February).

There is, however, plenty of recent evidence of underhand or inappropriate behaviour by lobbyists in the public domain.

The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency includes many bodies that recognise the value of a simple regulatory system. We would welcome lobbyists to join us in pushing for change.
