Anoushka Healy has been made assistant editor, strategy and development, responsible for new editorial products and projects.
Editor James Harding said: 'Everyone inside The Times has known for years that Anoushka plays a pivotal role in running the paper and encouraging innovation in both print and online.'
The move leaves The Times without a head of communications. The press office is being run by comms assistant Laura Westcott.
Ex-journalist Healy, who is 35, joined The Times as editorial communications director in 2002. Before that she was head of corporate communications for the Financial Times.
