DIARY: Boris gets into the thick of things

The PM is not the only politician hiring a strategist to improve his reputation. Gaffe-prone mayoral wannabe Boris Johnson has brought in Lynton Crosby in a bid to persuade people that he is no longer prone to gaffes.

Crosby masterminded four successive victories for John Howard, the former Australian prime minister, but has been less successful here in the UK. In 2005, he directed then Tory leader Michael Howard's faltering general election campaign.

Johnson, who once referred to black people as 'picaninnies', has also invited a Kenyan political PR consultant to join his campaign team. The appointment arrived just as democratic elections in the troubled African nation began to crumble, with tragic consequences.
