DIARY: Carter will do his utmost for Brown

More celebrations around Stephen Carter's desk at Brunswick. The former Ofcom chief exec and City agency CEO has landed a prime role advising Gordon Brown.

It is likely Carter's bank manager is less pleased, noting that the bespectacled supremo is wiping more than £800,000 off his salary.

But the good news is Carter is already firmly on message. Politicos will recall that Brown quoted the motto of his old high school when he became Prime Minister last year, pledging to 'try to do his utmost' in his new role.

Fast-forward to this week and a carefully crafted quote from Carter: 'I will do my utmost to make a difference to effective government.'
