Insight to lobby MPs as reading initiative begins

Insight Public Affairs is to raise political awareness of reading initiatives, as the Government kicks off a major drive to promote literacy throughout 2008.

The agency has been hired by the National Literacy Trust, which is responsible for delivering on the Government's plans to make 2008 the National Year of Reading with a number of community-based reading activities. There will also be two national campaigns this year to increase library usage and to recruit reading volunteers.

The National Literacy Trust, an independent charity, wants to initiate debate about motivation and enjoyment, links between literacy and culture, and social inclusion. It has tasked Insight with ensuring its messages get through to MPs so they can take local action, as well as raising the issue in Parliament.

- The Department for Children, Schools and Families has appointed Blue Rubicon to promote the National Year of Reading, having started the search for agency help last year (PRWeek, 19 October 2007).
