Tory MP lauded for street stunt

The comms manager at homelessness charity Thames Reach has praised Tory housing spokesman Grant Shapps for spending Christmas Eve sleeping in a London street to highlight homelessness.

Shapps visited two Thames Reach hostels before spending the night sleeping rough.

Housing minister Ian Wright dismissed the 'publicity stunt'. But Thames Reach comms manager Mike Nicholas said that although Christmas is the time that homelessness is already higher on the media agenda, Shapps's stunt 'helped the issue to reach millions of people through the media'.

Thames Reach is now stepping up its campaign to curb the sales of super-strength lager and cider products by asking the Government to tax these products at a higher rate.

It will be lobbying to increase the 37 MPs signed up to its early day motion to 50 in the next couple of weeks.
