Stewart is now in charge of all communications for the NGO. He will supervise a team of sixteen which includes the press office, publications, picture desk and web team.
He replaces John Sauven, who has been promoted to the NGO's top role of executive director. Although Sauven has been acting in the role since last year, his position was only made permanent three months ago.
Stewart said: ‘Six years ago when I joined Greenpeace, the team got excited when there was a climate change story in the media. Now there are so many stories, we are focusing on which direction it should go in. As an issue, climate change is only going to get bigger.'
