Letter - Is the Madeleine hype really helping?

I can well understand Clarence Mitchell and the McCanns being upset when the media run a Madeleine story on the flimsiest of evidence (Profile, 30 November). But surely this has been the case with the vast majority of stories over the past few months, featuring spurious tales of sightings?

The blanket media coverage has indeed kept this tragic event in the public eye - as was doubtless the original and understandable intention - but one wonders at what cost. Much of it has been rather distasteful and you cannot help wondering whether it has actually helped at all.
