Umbro, Campbell and a former Lion

Talking of mistakes, the Nike-Umbro deal (News, page 4) reminded Diary of Umbro's astonishing PR and branding gaffe in 2002, when it tried to use the German word for 'cyclone' as a monicker for some footwear. That word is 'zyklon' - synonymous with the gas used in Nazi concentration camps.

Continuing the sporting theme, and as a delicious non-sequitur, a man who has made a fair few mistakes in his time and lived to tell the tale is Alastair Campbell.

Fans of Yorkshire's finest PRO will know about his controversial management of press relations on the British Lions' rugby union tour of 2005.

Well, Campbell and former Lion Will Greenwood are to give a breakfast talk on behalf of the BGL Group called 'The Business of Media' on 8 November.

Like Father Christmas, but altogether more clean shaven and dashing, Diary is giving readers a 20 per cent discount on the ticket price. Quote ref: wgty in an email to info@fireballmanagement. com and you, Cinders, shall go to the ball.
