2 MINUTES WITH: Mark Hooper, editor, Electric

Virgin Media launches a customer magazine this month.

Hooper: 'focus on general entertainment'
Hooper: 'focus on general entertainment'

What will the content be like?
Electric will not be a straight listings magazine. It will focus on general entertainment, and we want it to be interesting enough for people to go out and buy as a standalone magazine. Our irreverent and tongue-in-cheek tone is key.

Who reads it?
It is currently being sent to 250,000 phone, TV and internet Virgin Media customers.

What sections do you have?
We have various sections linked to Virgin Media’s products such as TV, broadband and on-demand. We have avoided having a front and a back section and instead are incorporating features throughout the magazine.

What type of features are you running?
We are interested in fashion, sport, music, film and TV. We are currently running a feature on the changing face of the high street, which is a general cultural trend idea that will interest our broad audience. In our launch issue, we did a feature showing our readers how celebrity features get put together.

How should people get in touch?
We are bimonthly so we tend to work six to eight weeks in advance. Our next issue is out 1 December, and the one after 1 February, so we will need any ideas for February’s issue by Christmas. It is best to email me or the deputy editor Angela Everitt.

Any tips for PROs?
Keep us up to date with what they have got going on and put us on mailing lists. Make sure the idea is relevant for Virgin and is culturally interesting. Discuss an idea with us first rather than selling us a whole picture. We have to get everything checked with Virgin before we print it, so it is very unlikely that your idea will get printed in full.
