Essex council takes fight to Facebook

Essex County Council is claiming to be the first UK council to use Facebook as a PR tool, by launching a campaign against the planned closure of post offices throughout the county.

The council has set up the ‘Fighting for Essex’s Post Offices’ group on the social networking site.

The group is an attempt to encourage residents and those opposed to post office closures to work with the council to save Essex’s 31 threatened post offices. The group currently has 102 members.

Last week, the Post Office announced that 2,500 outlets would be closed across the UK.

Essex County Council senior press officer Eleri Roberts said: ‘We’re hoping to engage with a different audience. Obviously, most young people are on Facebook. They’re the people we don’t manage to get through to by using the usual methods.’

The council has also set up an online petition against the closures. Essex also plans to use Facebook for other forthcoming community initiatives and campaigns.
