Whitehorn is currently brand development and corporate affairs director at Virgin Group, as well as
president of Virgin Galactic. As of next month, he will be solely president of Virgin Galactic, which is planning to launch commercial space flights over the next few years.
Whitehorn said that he would still advise both Branson and CEO Stephen Murphy on crisis management issues, but confirmed that he would step away from day-to-day communications.
‘I will guide the Virgin Galactic team through the next few years and give the project a public face,’ he said.
Next year is a crucial year for Virgin Galactic as new technology will be unveiled in January and the first test flight takes place in the summer.
Jackie McQuillan, currently group PR director, will now take on the new title of media relations director and will oversee Branson’s personal PR and consumer affairs. A new position is being created to look after Virgin Group’s financial communications and regulatory affairs.
