Animal charity eyes up charts

Animal Defenders International is hoping an online PR campaign will propel a protest song to the UK Top 10.

Monkey in a Cage by Maria Daines has already been successful in independent charts. Now, the charity has been urging animal lovers to buy the tune in the hope of achieving mainstream success next week.

The initiative is timed to coincide with International Primate Day, which takes place this Saturday.

The charity hopes the song will help to publicise the plight of laboratory monkeys and put popular pressure on MEPs to sign up to a written declaration that calls for an end to experiments on primates.

The declaration is currently before the European Parliament. To date, 296 MEPs have signed up, with a total of 394 needed by 7 September.
