Wilson joins the agency after 11 years at Roche. The hire is part of a broader move by Athena to boost its international reach.
The newly created global business unit currently inv-olves account management staff working for two global accounts promoting unreleased products for Pfizer and BMS. Further hires are expected to take place over the next few months.
Wilson, who reports to MD Cherry Wood and will be based in London, said: ‘The agency has been going for 10 years and has a strong presence in the UK but needed to bring in expertise to increase the opportunities for global work. Ensuring that campaigns can be run in a number of countries is something that clients are very focused on and Athena wants to tap into that.’
Wilson has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for nearly two decades, in a number of clinical research, marketing, PR and public affairs roles. Former employers include Schering-Plough, AstraZeneca and MSD in her native South Africa.
Wilson joined Roche in South Africa in 1996 as a marketing manager before moving to the global director role at its Basel, Switzerland headquarters.
‘I’ve always worked in-house and the time had come in my career when I wanted to look at the agency world,’ she said.
